I have a real problem with a woman who has been victimized by Mr. Sa several times over asking for his forgiveness for having this misfortune of meeting her after he 1. murdered her husband 2. poisoned her daughter 3. shot her daughter and 4. arranged for her own brutal assault. That was pretty absurd. She was not responsible for those things; those increasingly desperate and heinous choices were all his. But MakRye was in an abusive relationship for many, many years and probably used to apologizing for things like that. That said, I was still upset by Sa's last scenes. He got what he deserved in the end--death--but I can see why fans were upset that he died by his own hand after all the horrible things he did. It robs the people he hurt of a sense of justice. (speaking from experience, sadly) But I was still bawling during his death scene.

Mr.Sa took an easy way out. Logical but an unsatisfactory ending to a pathetic life. I would have loved to see this guy rotting in a 6 by 6 cell with periodic traumatic beatings and fed with prison food and staring at the empty ceiling in his cell.
My other beef is with the "Land Lady" .. I do not get it every time Mr.Sa's name gets mentioned, she squirms all over how could my "Gijjin" do all this.. he is supposed her first love.. I do not see any acknowledgement from other side and in fact does this guy Mr.Sa knew her existence.. except for a small bit on scarf there was no interaction between the two, whatsoever. The writers did not care to give any weightage to that aspect of the drama. To her credit the actress portraying this single widowed/divorced mom of a good for nothing grownup daughter does a decent job of her character.
Only message I have for MakRye is SHUT UP. If you have not met Mr.SA, there would not be any Samsaengi to talk about. !!!! lol

I also feel we were cheated out justice for Sa. I was so annoyed last night, him calling D and then walking around to everyone appologizing and NOT ONE called the police. I think maybe its because that DA guy was threatened with ratting him out that perhaps he made all this just go away. We didn't even see Sa suffer, usually when they take poison they hold their stomachs or cough up blood, he just went to sleep peacefully and on top of someone he killed! Where is the suitcase full of money, he is leaving it to G or does it go back to the guy who sold the land so Doc can get the land back?
Forget nutty mom, she was never normal to begin with, she was a simple woman with not much in her head except what was happening at the moment.
J is walking around like a zombie...lol....and will be useless for a while. He didn't even change his clothes for days since he got out (phew)until last night when we saw a new shirt on him.

What is wrong with the police department? NOT ONE called the police. My fellow bloggers want to know the answers. The drama is based in 1970's South Korea with a controlling dictatorship and not in 24 hour cable news and iphone world we live in. By the way, in the 1950s lot of people got away in the South with mob lynching in the good old USA. May be they will not getting away now with murder but we still have Bernie Madoffs amongst us who are stealing Billions . Also, to this day money and power do play a big part in most of the non European cultures. They call it "corruption" and we call it "lobbying" or "interest groups".

It seems like Korea in the 70s was vastly different than the "Westernized" Korea we see in the more modern dramas. Many things are different than here even on those shows, of course, but there seems to be a police and court system comparable to ours. You could see it on "Three Brothers" where there was a trial and a police department featured. They both looked pretty familiar, if not exactly the same.
I live in Hudson County, known for its corruption and crooked politicians. Maybe it can't compare with 70's Korea, but if you are rushed to the hospital with gunshot wound, I am 100% certain the ER staff would call the cops even if the victim didn't want them to. They called the cops for me when I was bitten by a dog, even though I liked the dog and wouldn't have pressed charges. On a day-to-day basis, the law was followed, even if the important people got away with things. I'm sure the mayor's dog wouldn't get in the same trouble as a regular person's!
What a shame that the Bongs felt they had to handle this madman themselves, with no help.
As for Mr. Sa--I'm only 40% certain he's dead. This is my prediction for tonight.
Mr. Sa: Forgive me. Forgive me. I'm laying here dying of liver damage from the poison. Geumok:Don't worry, Father. I'm going to donate my liver to replace the one you ruined when you drank the poison yesterday. Dr. Bong: No! Don't donate your liver. Samsaeng and I will cure your liver with accupuncture. But--if you arrest my daughter, shoot my adult decoy baby, steal my money, kidnap my future son-in-law, or torture my adult decoy baby's crush again, I won't forgive you. Geumok: No, Opa. It's my fault he did all those things. Samsaeng: No, it's my fault. Makrye: No, it's my fault. Everyone else: Yes, it is. It's all Makrye's fault. Makrye: Can I borrow 100 won?

When Mr Sa apologized to Sammy last night, she stood there with that dumb cow expression on her face and didnt say anything. He basically ruined her life and she doesnt slap him, kick him in the **** shout, yell scream. What a joke. What I am sorry about is that i wasted 117 half hours on this piece of garbage. Did I miss something-- how did landlady find out about her daughter and Samm'ys "brother" After the shooting scene, Landlady is screaming at her daughter and locking her in her room???

I agree with all your comments, AWFUL episode, Geumok wanted to go with him after all what he has done!, I wanted Mr. Sa to be tortured, and get some and more, but I guess the writers wants to us to feel some sympaty for him... I don't get the explanation about what is going on with Jiseong, I guess is to our imagination, I won't be able to watch for two days I guess I will missed the last episode, I will read your reviews ....

Another bad episode. All the fond memories of Mr. Sa. Nobody remembers that he committed at least five or six felonies. I don't necessarily want to see him tortured. A nice scene with a jury and a guilty verdict would be enough, or even a couple of honest cops putting him in the cuffs and throwing him in the back of a police car would do.
Stupid cow expression about sums it up. Samsaeng never, ever looks happy. Not when she's getting rich, not when she's getting proposed to, never when she had the two boyfriends, not when she fulfills her dream to be a doctor. There was a Jennifer Aniston movie called the Good Girl where Jennifer had the same miserable look on her face the whole time. That was supposed to be an artsy type of movie about suffering, etc. I don't know what the problem is here. Sammy was so peppy, spunky and optimistic as a child, and the kid who played her was great. Either the acting on the adult actress's part or the directing was not up to par.
They are cutting scenes left and right now, to fit in more flashbacks.
Grace, I taught in the Union City public school system 5 years ago. Your continued employment/tenure depended on making campaign donations to the mayor and/or canvassing for him. His ex-wife stole gas from the city cars, or something like that. It remains extremely crooked, but I still think that if someone got shot, they'd make a police report!

Where have you guys been all these months? Just found this site. I am enjoying the series very much.
This is my first contact with others who watch the show. Better late than never. Don't get folks who claim to be watching all these episodes and feel they wasted their time. Are you a slow learner or what? If it's not for you, well, you should have bailed months ago.
The characters are interesting and the acting is good. A lot of twists and turns.
Some of the posts are insightful, some just silly.
It's my first Korean mini-series so I have no frame of reference but I look forward to each episode.
It's late, I'll be back.

Thanks Mara, I'm Tom from the Bronx in New York City. I'm Irish-American but I have been to Korea 4 or 5 times. I am a member of the Korea Society in NY.
I came across the show probably back in July just channel surfing. Once I saw the sub-titles I gave it a look. The kids were already grown and I took it for a conventional rom-com mini-series. I didn't know the back story and the mystery. So realizing I had missed the first few dozens of episodes I went on-line and tracked them down. I would watch one or two of the earlier episodes during the day and the latest episode in the evening on Ch. 20 WMBC. In my area the show starts at 9:30 PM but it always seemed to be 'on' already when it began. I found out that it really starts about 9:25 PM and the end of the Korean News. So I began taping from 9 - 10 and then skipping the news.
I'm a fan. I have caught up on the back episodes and watch each latest one. Sometimes I just tape them and then watch 2 or 3 at a time. I need more than 35 minutes for my enjoyment. Three in a row, that's interesting.
So there are 120 episodes and about 72 hours of program. I am enjoying it and following the twists and turns. At first I resisted when it got too serious with murder and political intrigue but now I see that's all part of the larger story. People's personal lives and dramas got caught up in the danger and drama of the larger world.
Two more to go. Then I am going out to look for the box set.
Greetings to my fellow fans. This is my first chance to interact with people familiar with the show.

tomw - I used to live in the Bronx but have been in Brooklyn for ages. Am currently visiting Paris for the week... Do you speak or understand Korean? I have been watching kdrama for 6 or more years now and have got to the point where I understand a little - the common words. I am annoyed by the dialect that they use in this drama as well as the last one - so different from the modern ones that take place in Seoul. Are you familiar with online sites like dramafever? Many of us here have been watching for years - look at some of the other drama threads if you want recommendations....

Hi Tom,--good to have another male voice. Like most of the others on this site, I have watched these Korean dramas for a few years and the last 3 we have gotten have been "TV novels" --all set in the 1970's. Compared to the modern dramas we used to get, these are not very good. I really like the ones I see on the computer on the sites that have Korean dramas with English subs. These are realy good shows --spies, doctors, cops etc just like USA shows. .

Hi, Tom. Welcome aboard.
I can't speak for anybody else, but I know that I really liked this show, but am not liking the ending. I want to see Mr. Sa punished, not forgiven or mourned by his victims. And I don't want him to have an "honorable" suicide. I am pretty sure I'm not the only one annoyed at that anti-climactic plot twist.
The new one, Eun-hee is supposedly better-written than Samsaengi. Samsaengi is by far the best of the "Television Novels" in my opinion. The first two were pretty bad, I agree with dodgerman on that. We used to have modern dramas with a little humor to break up the pathos, and once we had a gross-out sitcom.
Overall, this drama was one of the better ones, but I did want to see that man sent to prison. May he rot in Hell for all he's done.
