I don't see the point of this show, there is not suspense, I don't not it is so boring...

Something terrible is going to happen eventually, but there's not much foreshadowing. In this show's favor, most of the characters are nice, decent people, but watching nice, decent people eat kimchi together, talk about their educational plans and playing the guitar does not make for compelling television.

www.cato.org/publications/commentary/youll-never-guess-what-south-korea-frowns-upon I don't know how to get the link for this article, I just copy and paste, sorry , anyway the author talks how in 1980 after a new dictator came to power in South Korea the private tutoring was ban, with penalties and jail, as a way to control education, the education was public, and banning private education in any form, including tutoring which will give advantage to rich kids to against poor kids. I think the ban was lifter less the 10 years ago. In the other drama with the twins, the period was before 1980 so makes sense that she was able to be a tutor.

Latina...the link worked fine. Very interesting. They thought by not allowing the rich to be tutored the education would be equal? Weren't the poor too busy working to not be able to study anyways, they always went to those tent night classes.

lol...dodgerman.... I think Chan-ock and the guitar player should get married - she has spent her life as a live in maid for her dad and brothers - it's time she had some fun.....since he is poor and I think an orphan - she can move in with him next door but still come to the larger house and cook for all of them.... Well, I guess cram schools are not illegal- they can't be free, right? So poor kids couldn't go..... I have gotten into this - I think the characters are well developed and well acted - I can see why it was a hit back in the day....

I can't exactly see why this is the #1 show of all times (not yet, anyway) but it does something the "novels" and even the "cell phone" shows can't do. It presents realistic (more or less) characters with realistic problems. Mostly, they worry about money, what to major in, what school to go to, etc. just like normal people. Contrast that to say, Anna, who couldn't find the father of her baby because had an IQ of 68, or her parents because she fell off a boat and was taken to America and adopted by white people who apparently never taught her to speak English, or Mr. Sa, who was mad because he was forced to make his baby an evil-spirit attractor, or the hanbok lady whose baby was taken and given to her boyfriend then they told her she was dead so she married a guy with a son who fell in love with her baby.
Yes, I can see why this show is popular.

Yes, I agree - the people in this drama seem more ordinary - there isn't even a confusion of parentage, right?
As far as the #1 drama - I think I read when I first heard this was the next show up that it is one episode that is the highest rated - I don't want to know any spoilers so I won't look into this further now....

I actually liked the parts of this episode with ChooChoo & Ho Ky Pokey going back to their hometown. It was better the the scenes with the guitar man and Chanock that are just plain creepy.

I'm afraid to watch tonight, when C-Hyuck is going to be beaten by the gangsters. Why exactly is he being beaten up? Because he spent the night with Hokey after the car broke down and they think he destroyed her "honor?" Do they think he raped her? It didn't seem to bother them that the projectionist was a rapist.

I think it goes back to 4 years ago when he caused a scene in the movie theater with the projectionist.

Right, I agree, dodgerman. It seems in Korea when someone beats up someone else, they either get arrested and go to jail - think Jeongtae in the TV Novel - or pay compensation - this seems common even in the most modern dramas. Hyokyung's mom said something about the police but her brother right away said he and his boys would take care of it....meaning beat the s--- out of him
What I really don't remember is do Hyokyung's parents know that she was good friends with Chanhyuck (sp?) all through grade and high school?

Yes, and if someone beats you, the good person, up, you never, ever, ever, call the police. You just beat someone else up and then you yourself get arrested.
Still can't quite figure it out.

As adorable as he is imo, Chan-hyuk did beat up the projectionist pretty badly back a few years ago - obviously he thought he was justified because of what the guy did to Chan-ock but in reality he took things into his own hands - maybe poor people don't report things to the police? More or less the same scenario with Jeongtae in the TV Novel...
