Sometimes when I tune in to WMBC at night then sit down the next morning to post, I wonder, "What in heck is going on with you, girl?"
Any of you guys do the same? I suspect we're equally divided between male and female, range in age from 20 to 60+, and are as varied as snowflakes. But HOW did we come upon Korean drama in the first place and, if we're all so different, WHY do each one of us keep watching?
I found K-dramas by accident about 4 years ago. I was scrolling channels, bored with reality shows and not quite up to another Liz Taylor retrospective on TCM. I can't remember my first one, something about a poor family who sold food from a cart and a rich family with a mean matriarch; you know, the usual. I caught it in the middle so never really understood what was going on but I couldn't stop watching! Chill Sisters was the first one I sat through beginning to end; Dae Joyong my first historical. After that, I found the fan boards, the film sites, the books, videos and restaurants.
I'm hooked, I realize, but don't know why. Some dramas are great, others less so, but there I am, day after day watching, taping, posting.
I'd like to know how the rest of you discovered the dramas and why you became addicts. It might help me understand my own obsession.

Thanks for starting this - I was tempted to do the same. Your first drama, if it was the weekend, sounds like Farewell to Tears - wiki.d-addicts.com/Sad_Goodbye - it was on at about that time. I started a bit earlier than you with Bizarre Bunch. I was actually looking for Japanese programming. I went to Japan for the first time in Spring 2004 and got hooked on Japanese culture - I started taking Japanese lessons with a private teacher, and she was the one who suggested I watch jdoramas. Well, WMBC, at that time, had fujitv programming starting at 10 pm so by tuning in early I found the Korean dramas - the Japanese tv didn't have esubs and it went off the air shortly thereafter. I have been with the kdramas ever since.... I am one of the older members in your range....I pretty much watch no American tv shows. During the day I have the business channel on and at night CNN or the PBS channels here in NYC - WNET or WLIW.....I do like The Amazing Race on CBS - but I watch it as a travel show - I recently read it won some award as a reality tv show but I never even realized that was its classification. I really have no interest in visiting Korea although I would love to go to Seoul and sit at the river where we see everyone go when they are depressed in all the dramas.....didn't Taesu go the other day? Actually I will be making my fifth trip to Japan in April...... Now I am watching a couple of other dramas on dramafever.com - I got started with two of them when I had a temporary free subscription to MBC America from Verizon FIOS - my free sub ended but the same dramas are online with only a couple of weeks delay. It seems like most of those dramas, produced by MBC, seem to have more of a plot line than the KBS that we are seeing and I recommend watching dramafever assuming you have a fast 'net connection..... If you liked DJY you should like Queen Seondeok and 'Chulin' is one of the stars.....
