Well, the last episode didn't thrill me - the battle scenes were not that great- you could see that they were having budget problems....and yes, as Linda said, I think both Ko Un and Fengba would have lost their heads.....I was hoping we would hear a bit more about Yakyeon and baby DDs... ;-) Like a big family picture that we see at the end of the weekly family dramas....lol....
I recorded the last episode and was able to verify by comparing the Korean info screen with the info I have on the next drama that it is King of Legend - will set up new thread during the week....hope we enjoy it....

Peyah, It's over!!!! I think because the series was extended certain actors might have had other conflicts so they disappeared from the show---Yaky, the other Mo brother General, Ko Chang(yak's bro), etc. The show was very one-dimensional---battle, battle, battle. There was little politics after the abortive coup, and very little personal relations with his wive and children. King of Legend is also very early time-wise so it probably will be a lot of battles as well.

The problem with Gwanggaeto is mostly with the last 30% of the series, I thought where it became so much disappointing filler content. Once the budget issues started manifesting with KBS this year, the series started to plateau and the writer's inexperience started to crack and show under the pressure and they lost their focus. Didn't help KBS started to shift their resources and budget with the upcoming fall historical series with Choi Su Jong's return to historical, which initially had budget problems too. It was supposed to start right after Gwanggaeto, but they had to delay it until the fall due to the aforementioned budget issues. The fall series, King's Dream looks like it could be one of KBS' best in a while though, so I don't mind them shifting their priorities!
In general I like battles and action scenes, but towards these last episodes of Gwanggaeto, the battles were mostly pointless micro-battles take a fort here, lose a fort, take it again... on and on. Dae Jo Young had a lot of battles, but they were epic and had a point, so they were fun to watch. Gwanggaeto's early battles, I found really good too... but towards the end? Disappointing.
The next series, King of Legend is good, based on what I've read of the comments in this thread, I think some of you may enjoy it more than this series. For me personally, I didn't find it quite as entertaining to me in terms of entertainment factor since the early parts of Gwanggaeto reminded me of one of my old favorites, Dae Jo Young. Unlike DJY though, Gwanggaeto got weaker as it went on... DJY's end portions were amazing.
KoL excels in some areas where Gwanggaeto failed in, but for me the reverse is also true. On the plus side, it has less episodes, and weren't affected by the 2012 budget issues, so it's more consistent in terms of the quality and the end parts of King of Legend is well worth watching. It's more balanced of a series too, more court politics and internal politics with women fighting for political control for their clans, and the antagonist and rival to the protagonist is better than Ko Un in Gwanggaeto, who started out interesting... but they did not know quite where to take the rivalry and character to make it interesting. For me though, King of Legend's main character lacks the charisma factor that the actor playing Damdeok has, as well as the huge all star historical ensemble cast of Gwanggaeto... King of Legend's is good in this regard, but not as many long-time veterans. Both are good, just in different ways.
It's a shame the order in which you're seeing KoL is after Gwanggaeto. The actual chronological airing was KoL then Gwanggaeto, since Gwanggaeto is only some decades later, the story from KoL in some ways carries into Gwanggaeto.

Thanks very much for your interesting comments, superrookie - very helpful in understanding what happened to the end of this historical drama - after deciding to lengthen it, then cutting it back and so many of the actors dropped out because of other commitments or whatever. We are lucky to get any kdramas here in NYC - unless one subscribes to a premium channel the local station that we see dramas on is the only choice we have.....not as lucky as you all out on the Left Coast.... As far as seeing the earlier time period in King of Legend, Dae Jo Young which we saw here quite a while back is a period well after so I guess we have to get used to the time jumps....

My comment in the new drama thread was going to state my wish that Historical dramas were made chronologically lol but here in the East we seem to get 'part 2' first then part 1 follows lol.
-Anyway, I found this last episode utterly piss poor and almost unwatchable and what was that conversation between Murong Un and DD, I was begging DD to at least poke Un in his shameless bastard eyes. Like what was said this started off with a bang then ended sort of prematurely and I understand the budget issues, but then it drives home the need for always having a plan B. I too shall miss the sexy emo Prince who became the sexier beastly King.
